Elkhart County 4-H Quick! What is the nation's largest out-of-school education program for youth? It's 4-H! Surprised? Don't be. Last year over 6,500 took part in Elkhart County 4-H programs through involvement in clubs, school enrichment programs & special interest groups. 4-H focuses on: Most of this informal education comes through participation in projects and/or activities selected by the youth. More than 50 projects are available to Elkhart County youth. Newer projects & activities such as computer, consumer clothing, fairboard apprentice, fishing, microwave cooking, lawn tractors, llama, recycling, clowning, scrapbook, collections & 4-H S.A.F.E. (Sporting Arms Family Education) have been added. Special interests groups & school enrichment programs such as Blue Sky Below My Feet (adventures in space technology), Classroom Gardening; Discovering Electricity, Exploring The Food Pyramid, Indiana's Water Riches, Project G.R.O.W. (Guidelines, Responsibilities, Options & Self-Worth), & Project L.E.A.D. (Legal, Education to Arrest Delinquency) are available to area teachers, through youth service agencies and Elkhart County Parks Department. Exploring 4-H is open to all youth in grades 1 & 2. 4-H is open to all youth when they enter 3rd grade . Youth may continue membership through the completion of grade 12. However 4-H does not stop when you graduate. Just ask the 350 plus volunteer adult leaders who help with county clubs & programs. People who have an interest in quality of life in their community generally become involved with the youth of their community.
