Recycle Plastic Bottle Caps and Lids for a Park Bench
How this began:
The idea for the environment-friendly recycled benches came from a school system in Elkhart County in 2015. The Green Committee then contacted Green Tree Plastics Company, in Evansville, Indiana for the specific information. The collection of the caps and lids for the 100% recycled benches must to be done by Youth. They must also be involved in the cleaning and sorting of the plastics. Each 6 foot bench is made from 400 pounds of recycled plastic. Then the Green Committee offered this as a Community Service Project for 4-H Clubs.
We offered the opportunity to a 4-H Clubs. If they collect 50 pounds or more they can have their Club name on the bench along with other clubs that also collected 50 pounds. If the youth of the 4-H club collect at least 400 pounds of clean caps and lids they could have their clubs name on their own bench. By the 2015 Fair the 4-H Clubs and the Green Committee were able to get 4 blue benches to be used in Heritage Park on the Fairgrounds.
After the Fair, there were requests by other groups and organizations to get involved in the program. We are asking these groups to have Youth to help in the collecting, sorting, and cleaning of the plastic caps and lids as well. So, this year 2016, we are continuing the 4-H Club’s collecting and working towards new benches. We are also allowing other groups to participate. They must collect 400 pounds and provide the sponsorship money for the bench of $275.00.
The caps and lids from all groups need to be to the Green Committee by June 1 sooner would be better, for this year’s Fair. This will allow time to for the committee and groups of youth to help check, sort, and weigh the caps, allow time to transport and deliver the benches in time for the Fair. Please contact Jan for the drop off of the caps. Please do not just leave them at the Fairgrounds or the Extension Office.
If you have questions and or would like to get involved in the program please feel free to contact the Green Committee Chairperson at Elkhartcountygreenfair@gmail.com for information to answers any questions you may have.
Jan Robinson, Chairperson
Every cap or lid that goes into a bench does not go into the land fill. A Win-win situation.
